Once again, the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself deeply immersed in a mystery! She wakes up unusually early one morning and, after dropping off her daughters for their charity work at the Blind Institute, she pays a visit to a university professor she had met on a previous case. The professor invites her for dinner at his home in Williamstown, and she gladly accepts. During the dinner, Phryne makes two troubling discoveries: an abandoned opium pipe in the park and the body of a Chinese man on the beach, whose cause of death is initially unclear but later ruled as a homicide.
Shortly after, the teenage sister-in-law of Phryne's longtime lover Lin Chung disappears. Things take a more sinister turn when one of the professor's colleagues is murdered at a Chinese-themed party he is hosting. Phryne begins to suspect that all these incidents may be connected. Meanwhile, someone has been leaving threatening notes in her letterbox, warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH".
In addition to the resourceful and stylish Phryne, this intriguing mystery also involves her three wards who have their own mysteries to unravel: Ruth and Jane, who are investigating an embezzler at the Institute, and Tinker, whom Phryne asks for help in uncovering the person behind the threatening notes.
Phryne Fisher is once again at the center of a thrilling mystery, filled with danger, intrigue, and unexpected twists. Will she be able to solve the puzzle and unravel the web of mysteries surrounding her, her friends, and her wards? Only time will tell.
